The Power of Music!

It’s been said, music is the universal language. I don’t know who coined the phrase, but it appears to carry a lot of truth! Artists can travel around the world singing to those who don’t speak their language and still be just as powerful as they are in their native land. Why? Because song has power!

Why does it have power? Well, I have been asking myself that question since I was a teenager and played my first guitar and wrote my first song. I have always loved music and I believe most every one on earth can say the same thing. Of course, we have our own personal preferences when it comes to style and genre`. But we love it, nonetheless!

But, why is it so powerful? Why can thousands of people gather in one place, a stadium or coliseum for one single purpose to make one sound together and shake a city, nation or generation.  I don’t know. It’s a mystery.

I believe it is a God mystery!!!

And although some of those gatherings are not for or because of God, the principle is still the same because I believe the principle was birthed in the heart of God!

Darlene Zschech, world renowned Praise and Worship leader and Pastor, said once, “Praise gives music its purpose”! King David, the sweet Psalmist of Israel [2 Samuel 23], created instruments to be used in declaring the greatness of God. Hearts of people so overwhelmed with gratitude that they burst out with song to God in their homes and their cities with the sound, at times, shaking the earth!

At the Red Sea, the nation of Israel burst forth in song and dance because God had delivered them from their enemies! David, burst forth into dance and song because of the goodness of God and His Presence! Countless others, in spontaneous outbursts of praise because of the goodness of God, are spoken of in Scripture.

Not by rote or tradition, but from the heart!

People sing for many reasons. Joy, sorrow, anger, contentment, gratitude and most powerfully, in my opinion, for the declaration of something bigger than themselves. To declare love, unity and revolution! Not a revolution bringing war, but bringing Truth and change! It is these songs that change nations and people forever!

These are my personal favorite!

Again, in Scripture, singers were sent out to sing in battle even before the warriors were sent out! And when God heard the sound of the people praising Him, he sent ambushes against the enemy and His people didn’t have to lift a sword!

Now THAT is power!!!! And THAT my friends, is the Divine purpose of music. David, before he was king, played music for King Saul when he was tormented in his mind and the evil spirits left him! Talk about power!

unsplash_52c319226cefb_1We know that people are free to use music for whatever purpose they hold in their heart. For good or evil. Because of it’s power those who wield it should do so with sobriety and respect. But, many do not and because of that, carry people, by their philosophies set to melody, away into destruction, anger and war.

You can say something in music that you would never get away with just by speaking it out. This is the power of music.

That power, through praise, will be unleashed in our city tonight! Voices of hundreds lifted in unity to declare the Truth of God and Jesus Christ will be in harmony, in sound and in heart, to lift the Name of our God over our city and the people who dwell with us here!

Songs of healing, salvation, deliverance, love, unity, joy and celebration! Dancing declaring the goodness and faithfulness of God.  I will leave you with a picture by Martin Smith of what it will look like in our city tonight when music and worship from God’s people is released!

Did you feel the mountains tremble?
Did you hear the oceans roar?
When the people rose to sing of
Jesus Christ, the Risen One

Did you feel the people tremble?
Did you hear the singers roar?
When the lost began to sing of
Jesus Christ, the Saving One

And we can see that God You’re moving
A mighty river through the nations
When young and old will turn to Jesus
Fling wide you heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord

Open up the doors and let the music play
Let the streets resound with singing
Songs that bring Your hope
Songs that bring Your joy
Dancers who dance upon injustice

Do you feel the darkness tremble?
When all the saints join in one song
And all the streams flow as one river
To wash away our brokenness

And we can see that God You’re moving
A time of jubilee is coming!
When young and old will turn to Jesus
Fling wide you heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord
