Settling the “Christmas” Issue

Ok….I have a pet peeve and here it is: We are deep in the Christmas season with only two more weeks until the big day and that means… media posts about saying “Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays” and taking “Christ” out of Christmas, etc. christmas

And although I get the motivation behind the posts, I do not stand in defense of them because Christmas needs no defense and I’ll tell you why.

First of all, you can never take Christ out of Christmas because He is the reason it exists in the first place. Christ is the origin of Christmas so taking Him out is not even valid, therefore arguing about it, is inapplicable. Of course, I understand why the argument but that is just what it is……an argument. A distraction. A tool from our adversary used to get us distracted with these petty issues, so we end up arguing with the world instead of reconciling them to Christ.

We have been given the ministry of reconciliation…..not the ministry of division. Yes, Christ did come to bring a sword, the Word tells us that, but we are way too concerned about the propaganda that is being presented about what we can and can’t do or say as Christians. Yes, I called it propaganda because that is what it is. It is bias and meant to get us in an uproar and distracted. Dare I go further to say it is RELIGIOUS propaganda. Well, I just did!

Religious in nature, but not Christ-like at all. Fear based propaganda. Based in conflict, not in love. Born out of the womb of self-righteousness not grace. We had better wake up, believers, and recognize that there is something more sinister at work here. Even the devil appears as a preacher of righteousness and an angel of light [2 Cor. 11:14 & 15]

I am afraid the enemy has us far too distracted with this strategy in order that we might neglect our true mission; that of sharing the truth that God has reconciled the world to Himself through His Son. Lets’ face it, hearts are more open to this message at Christmas than at any other time of the year and we are poisoning the atmosphere of grace with our petty arguments. We should be using our influence on social media more wisely than this.

We’re called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. He was well aware of the political unrest between the Romans and the Jews of His day. However, He was far too focused on completing the work the Father had given Him to do than become distracted and pulled away by the rants and insurrections of perhaps Barabbas and others like him. These men had given up trusting in the justice of God and, instead, put their trust in their own arguments, wisdom and the force of their own hand.

Jesus knew and understood the injustices of the day. He witnessed them first hand because they were hurled upon Him ultimately to His death. He didn’t fight to try and change the political environment because He knew that the true power did not lie in that system, it was in His Father’s plan and that is what He gave Himself to. And so must we.

My question is….are we exercising our liberties on a daily basis? Not because we’re trying to prove a point to the world but because we walk in communion with Christ and desire liberty for all? Are we concerned about Christ in Christmas because we are grieved that the world might not hear the good news about Him or because we are standing up for our rights? And if we are Christ’s, do we have any rights anyway? Aren’t we bondservants of Christ [Eph. 6:6] obligated to nothing other than love [Romans 13:8]?

If you can’t have a “Christmas” play at school, why not have one in your front yard or home and invite the neighborhood? Why not take your liberties to the highest level and do something yourself? Why wait for the system to agree with you? Take your liberty and go sing Christmas Carols, share the Christmas Story door to door or in your home? There are many ways for you to practice and share Christmas even though it may not be sanctioned in some public systems.  Just do it!

I have never had anyone snarl at me or rebuke me in a public arena for saying ” Merry Christmas”….never! On the contrary, all it ever does is make people smile! I believe public representatives such as store clerks , etc. are instructed to say “Happy Holidays” not because they don’t believe in Christmas or because they are Jesus bashers, but to respect and include other religious holidays that occur during this season. You may say that I am being naïve, but my personal experience speaks for itself in shaping my belief of this issue.

We must be wise and awake, redeeming the time, for the days are evil [Eph. 5:16] We must realize that no one can take our liberty because true liberty is found in Christ. Agendas can remove His name, His symbols , etc from society but they can never remove Him…..He is God. Jesus’ Name has been declared as above all others by God Almighty; worshiped in heaven and on earth. Even the demons tremble at His name and one day every knee will bow and confess Him as Lord.

As long as we are standing in the gap for our nation and turning from our own wicked ways, God will hear from heaven and heal our land. LOVE NEVER FAILS. It didn’t fail Jesus and it won’t fail us.

Besides….when you think about the fact that people argue to remove someone they don’t really believe exists it kind of loses its power don’t you think?

Hello, let’s call it what it is: propaganda and drama and live our lives surrendered to Christ and get on with the Father’s business of reconciliation. Have a very Merry Christmas!
